After conducting an interview over the phone with Mr. Eric Turner, I learned many things about Plainview that could only come from a resident. He confirmed some of the information I had previously gathered, while still providing new, interesting facts as well. I, having lived in the New England area, was surprised at how different things can be here. The details of this conversation will be blogged in a series of posts titled, "Firsthand Experience" and the content will be designated by "parts" which will have a subtitle. This is Part 01 - Water.
The conversation started with some comments I had made about the origins of towns here in west Texas. One fact was certain : towns formed around water. A water source was the first thing that would be sought out upon settling in an area. Mr. Turner confirmed this explaining that Plainview had formed around the draw and then proceeded to grow upwards and around the hill. Unsure of what he meant by the "draw," I searched the internet and found an image of the Brazos River Basin, also called the Brazos River Draw. (image of map from waterschool.brazos.org) Upon reading the article on this site, I learned that the Brazos river has an enourmous watershed that comprises approximately 44,620 square miles, 42,000 of which are located in Texas.
